futurebird's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- the city wakes up There are few things quite as exciting as watching a big city opening its huge heavy eyelids to start a new day. 5:30 found me at grand central terminal. I rode down from the Y on a train full of solid-looking people. Everyone on the train was in their mid thirties, tired, overworked, heavy limbs, no smiles. These are the people who turn the big key at the heart of the city to getting it running each day. The bakers, the men who hose down the sidewalks and shovel the ice, women who wash windows and sweep out shops. A sad bunch, all told. But, maybe they were just sleepy. Its funny, Ive seen it in London, in Pittsburgh, Cleveland and now here in New York. Trains are divided by class over time. Early morning brings in blue collar, then around 9:00 the white collars show up and at 11:00a tourists and senior businessmen. The same waves of people come every week day. And its been like this for nearly a century. 9:31 a.m. - 2001-06-29 ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- |
